As I have maintained from day one of this blog, Baseball Prospectus is a “must have” resource for a Keeper League GM.
Yesterday I highlighted Matt Wieters, who was clearly the most surprising in the Top 10 most valuable players according to Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA system.
Here were a few of the OF’s that popped out at me ranked by VORP and their projected lines:
#25-Jody Gerut, OF, SDP.: .302 Avg, 15 HR, 63 RBI, 8 SB, .365 OBP, .500 SLG (865 OPS)
#50-Jay Bruce, OF, Cin.: .283 Avg, 28 HR, 90 RBI, 12 SB, .342 OBP, .509 SLG (851 OPS)
#62-Justin Upton, OF, Arz.: .278 Avg, 21 HR, 73 RBI, 11 SB, .361 OBP, .506 SLG (867 OPS)
#69-Chris Young, OF, Arz.: .268 Avg, 24 HR, 82 RBI, 19 SB, .341 OBP, .487 SLG (828 OPS)
#146-Nick Swisher, 1B/OF, NYY: .244 Avg, 24 HR, 73 RBI, 3S B, .353 OBP, .460 SLG (813 OPS)
#184-Nelson Cruz, OF, Tex.: .260 Avg, 25 HR, 83 RBI, 14 SB, .335 OBP, .484 SLG (819 OPS)
Odds are that Jay Bruce, Chris Young, and Justin Upton are long gone in the first several rounds in the draft, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a deal. In the case of Cruz, there are a lot of prognosticators betting on a big year. PECOTA is pretty generous. Both he and Swisher may be worth a mid-round flier.
